MOST INNOVATIVE COMPANIES: Utilis

Forty-six billion gallons of treated water are wasted each year due to leaks in pipes that are often too costly to spot thanks to aging technologies. Israel-based tech company Utilis saw a solution. By using satellite imagery to detect leaks and non-revenue-water, Utilis helps municipalities save billions of gallons of water. Utilis can image more than 860 acres at a time, which it then analyzes to find problem spots with an algorithm that can detect treated water. The results are then compiled into easily understandable reports for users that show leaks overlaid onto a map. The reports contain specific street piping locations and is then used to fix leaks and prevent new ones from getting out of control. So far, Utilis has partnered with dozens of water distribution companies across the world.
